History of 7 Card Stud
 |
Poker, whether it is seven card stud or another name got its start from the name poker. There is a lot of questions as to the origin or history of the game. Some say it has its beginnings from the fifteenth century German game Pochspiel although some believe it came from Persia. As Nas was the name of this card game, but very little is known of this one as it seemed to be a game of five cards dealt out of a twenty pack deck. The French game poque is similar as well and is believed to have come from the region where poker is said to have started. The meanings of these words “to brag or bluff” give the main idea of the game. It would seem that all of these combined games give us what we now think of as poker today.
The introduction of poker around the world is well known in the United States and it is reported that New Orleans hosted the game in 1829. It was played with a deck of twenty cards and four players. Its popularity spread on the Mississippi riverboats and beyond to the west. As it gained more players the deck expanded to today’s fifty two cards. Many games were introduced after more cards were being played draw poker. Lowball, split pot poker and seven card stud poker are among some of the games. This article will follow the seven card stud game.
To understand the history of seven card stud you must first understand what stud means. You begin by placing a bet in the pot. You are then dealt a series of cards; five card stud was the first variation of this. It is a combination of some cards dealt face up and some cards dealt face down. These became known as streets and you can place a bet following each street or round. The beginning stud play was from three to five card hands.
The idea of seven card stud is to receive seven cards and from these seven cards make a winning hand of five cards. You will get three cards dealt face up with a betting round or street. You will also get four cards dealt face down with a street or betting round. You will want to make the best possible combination from these seven cards. Obviously playing with more cards will increase your chances of having a better five card hand. Once the cards have been dealt and all bets placed you will find out who has the winning hand. This is a change from the first stud play with a smaller deck and number of players.
The introduction of the World Series of Poker tournament in the 1970’s and continuing today has brought the game of seven card stud to the world stage. You can catch a glimpse of these champions playing for big money on television or on satellite. Seven card stud has produced many winners since it began and it is still a fun game to play if you are not a professional.
